Be the Match Firefighter's Challenge
Here is the link to the Be the Match Firefighter's Challenge being held from August 10th - Sept 30:
The mission of the Be The Match Firefighters Challenge is to increase the number of marrow donors on the registry, raise funds to support patients and research, increase awareness and build community.
Please open this link and help me to spread the word about this worthy cause. Most local fire departments are pledging between $5,000 - $10,000 and will sign up 500 - 1,000 donors during this challenge. I think that if we asked for all of our fire houses to donate, we could raise a significant amount of the challenge total.
Please review and consider donating to this cause.

Straw Poll online vote - Pay Where You Eat
A Straw Poll online vote will begin tomorrow May 22 at 12:01 am and close on May 29 at 11:59 pm.
The following will be the polling matter and answer options:
At the March 2013 General Membership meeting there was a member request that we conduct a straw poll to see whether members would be interested in a house fund “Pay Where You Eat” practice rather than the current practice of paying where you are assigned. Please share your thoughts by checking one of the boxes below. This is not a vote to change this practice, it is a poll to see if this issue will be pursued further.
1. Keep house fund payment as it is now; pay where you are assigned.
2. Change to a “Pay Where You Eat” practice. This includes traders.
Firefighter James Harris of Engine 20/ Truck 7 has some good things going on his off days.

Supreme Court Chips Away At Worker Rights - Again
|June 30, 2014 – In another example of why elections matter, the politically appointed members of the U.S. Supreme Court handed down their decision today in Harris v. Quinn today. Harris involves a challenge by the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation on behalf of eight in-home health care workers for Medicaid recipients against the state of Illinois (and indirectly SEIU). The Supreme Court ruled narrowly that the First Amendment prohibits a union’s collection of fees for the cost of representation activities (known as “agency fees”) from in-home health care workers who do not wish to join or support the union.|

Could Your Flame Retardant Sofa Kill Fire Fighters?
|June 24, 2014 -- For years, fire fighters and environmentalists have warned of the dangers from upholstered furniture treated with flame-retardant chemicals that are linked to cancer, decreased fertility, hormone disruption and lower IQ development. A bill in California would require upholstered furniture manufacturers to clearly disclose whether or not furniture sold in California contains flame-retardant chemicals. Rebuilding Our Memorial to the Fallen

Hundreds more make private pilgrimages throughout the year. To ensure the integrity of the site remains intact for future generations of fire fighters and their families, the IAFF will be putting forth a resolution at the 2014 Convention for reconstructing the entire Memorial site. |

Giving Muscular Dystrophy the Boot
|May 9, 2014 – The year was 1954. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the White House home, a gallon of gas averaged 22 cents, and the television show “Father Knows Best” kept Americans captivated with Hollywood’s version of the perfect family. But, as explained in a 1954 article published in The Press-Gazette (Hillsboro, Ohio), no one knew best when it came to treating the estimated 200,000 Americans diagnosed with a strange ailment called muscular dystrophy. This “very costly disease,” the article explained, baffled researchers, and although the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), founded in 1950, was dedicated to “seeking the cause and a cure for this mysterious and fatal malady,” insufficient research funds kept progress at bay.|
